Locals and visitors alike will always receive a warm welcome here at the Golden Dog Hotel. We are open daily from 10am.
We have a wonderfully interesting quirky and friendly little pub right in the heart of Glenreagh – the perfect place to stop for a beer and a bite on your way north or south on the Orara Way. Or a perfect destination for Sunday lunch and a drive in the country.
GREAT FOOD
For some good honest pub grub you can go no further than the Bistro at the Golden Dog Hotel. We pride ourselves on serving up delicious meals to locals and visitors that are huge and affordable.
The Golden Dog Hotel is a great place to take the family for a drive and stop for Sunday Lunch.
We have an extensive selection of items on our blackboard menu. Every day we also have a choice of at least two Specials for that day – what’s on is as much of a mystery to us as it is to our customers. Our Master Chefs only let us know that morning. We love it this way cos we know we are in for a treat every day. We also take special requests.
GREAT BEER
The Golden Dog, steeped in history, is a welcoming place to pull up a stool and sink a cold beer. We warmly welcome visitors and you will almost always be guaranteed a bit of a yarn with one of our locals.
We believe a good pub is all about good people because people make it a special experience when you visit a pub. Maybe it’s the smiles, or us going that extra mile that will leave you feeling you have found a local away from home.
The Golden Dog – The Legend
The story goes that back in the times of abundant gold mining in the area. One day a man ran into the pub showing off a rather large gold nugget. He and locals alike all agreed that it was very much in the shape of a dog, a Golden Dog, and this is where the pub got its name. At least, this is the legend that Steph and Brendon were told when they bought the pub in 2018, and they are sticking with that.
The first license for a hotel in Glenreagh was granted in 1896. At that stage, the hotel was located at a different site further up the street. The pub was relocated to its current site and was re-opened in 1916. A fire destroyed this building in 1940 with new premises erected on the same site. The ‘new’ pub officially opened in 1945 and called “The Golden Dog Hotel”.
The hotel burnt down for a 2nd time in June 1991 and the current building built in the same spot.
The Dog
In 2011 a prior owner of the pub, Warren Dean, commissioned a four metre tall six metre long dog statue. The intention was for it to become a tourist attraction for travellers along the Orara Way.
